After successfully securing 2 contracts to supply 3m³ legacy boxes to accelerate waste retrievals on the Sellafield site last month, CMA has now secured the MPAS contract to deliver critical spares to the site over the next four years.

These products are deployed site-wide and are essential to maintaining continuous operations.

The scope also includes:

• provision of calciner spares, critical to the functioning of Sellafield’s high-level waste plant
• delivery of manufacturing trials and prototyping activities to support innovation and development

These awards reflect the trust placed in our joint venture and the capability of our teams across West Cumberland Engineering and Bendalls Engineering, alongside CMA Partners.
It also highlights the growing strength of Cumbria’s manufacturing sector and the vital role it plays in supporting national infrastructure.

We’re delighted to announce that the Shepley Group is now a Strategic Partner of BuildForce, a not-for-profit career service supporting military personnel in pursuing long-term careers across the construction, infrastructure, and wider built environment sectors.

Buildforce is a nationwide initiative, designed as a mutually beneficial collaboration between ex-military service personnel and organisations within the engineering industry.

The partnership will see the Shepley Group supporting military candidates with direct mentoring, work placements and working together to create opportunities within our business and the wider Renew Group. We recognise the vast array of transferable skills acquired throughout a military career that can be used in a wide range of industry roles, such as project management, leadership, safety, and problem-solving.

The box was installed in memory of Eric Brown, former manager of the Cogra Moss fishery who passed away last year. Eric was a member of Cockermouth Angling Association and managed the fishery for many years.

Designed, fabricated and installed by the Shepley Group, the box will be used by anglers to submit reports and provide information about their fishing activity, including the types and numbers of fish caught, released, and kept, as well as the location and date of fishing. These catch returns help to manage fish stocks and monitor fish health.

Adam is a 4^th Year Plater at West Cumberland Engineering and completed his Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering last year, achieving a Distinction in his End Point Assessment. He was nominated by his employer and picked up several votes from tutors and assessors within the College, showing just how universally recognised his hard work was.

Lakes College Assistant Principal, Iain Glendinning, said when presenting the award;

“Adam has been an exemplary employee and apprentice throughout his training and continues to be a role model to others. He has been a credit to himself and his employer and is a true asset to the company. The attitude and self-motivation he has applied to his academic and practical work are an example for others wanting to succeed to follow. He has demonstrated an excellent attitude and work ethic from the beginning.”

Callum Woodend, Managing Director of West Cumberland Engineering, commented;

“I am incredibly proud of Adam for receiving this award, which serves as a well-deserved recognition of his hard work and determination throughout his apprenticeship. Adam’s story is an inspiring example of what can be achieved with determination and hard work. He serves as a role model for current and future apprentices, not only at West Cumberland Engineering, but also other students within Lakes College.

Adam started his career with West Cumberland Engineering after joining as part of the PPP internship scheme. Adam had previously been to Energy Coast UTC and studied Level 1 Machining, Mechanical and Welding and Level 2 Machining and Mechanical diploma, however this was unexpectedly curtailed and he agreed he would start as a Level 1 apprentice at WCEL.

Adam had applied for three internships and had been accepted for all three. He felt he was best suited to engineering, and chose West Cumberland Engineering due to the ethos of personal and professional development throughout the company. He explained that WCEL “show really good interest in helping develop you, your skills, and your knowledge. It is a great place to work.”

He has since developed well in to his role, winning the Lakes College Engineering Apprentice of the Month for November and being involved in PPP projects such as Tanks & Vessels, F1.2 wallboxes & encast items, F5 Pump & Valve and F19 Pipebridge, for SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP).

West Cumberland Engineering Managing Director Callum Woodend has high hopes and expectations for Adam, saying

“Adam has been an exemplary Apprentice showing a fantastic attitude and work ethic to not only his college work and apprenticeship, but also to the high-status projects he has worked on. Starting his apprentice all over again after two years, shows how much of a resilient, committed individual he is and he deserves all the recognition for obtaining a distinction in his level 3 Diploma. I wish Adam all the best in his new role as a fully qualified plater and hope that he is a role model to our current and future apprentices.”

Mechanical Apprentice Supervisor Dave Norman commented on Adam’s performance, “Adam has been an exceptional apprentice, he has been entrusted to work on some very high profile production projects for quite some time. Adam is an exceptional role model to other apprentices at the Shepley Group.”

Adam is one of 95 apprentices at the Shepley Group and a stellar example of what is possible with hard work and determination.
