West Cumberland Engineering are seeking an experienced Quality Manager to lead and enhance our Quality Management System across a diverse portfolio of engineering and fabrication. Based in Workington, you will play a key role in ensuring excellence, compliance, and continuous improvement as we continue to support major programmes within the nuclear supply chain.
The Role
As Quality Manager, you will be the organisational lead for quality assurance, compliance, and continuous improvement. You will oversee our accredited management systems, support project teams through all lifecycle phases, and ensure we meet the rigorous expectations of the wider nuclear industry stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and continually develop the company Quality Management System (ISO 9001) and associated welding quality systems (ISO 3834, EN 1090).
- Act as the primary point of contact for quality matters with clients, contractors, and auditing bodies.
- Manage internal and supplier audit programmes, NCR processes, and corrective/preventive actions.
- Support project risk and opportunity management, quality planning, ITP development, and inspection regimes.
- Oversee document control, quality records, and compliance with nuclear safety and assurance expectations.
- Provide leadership and mentoring to quality inspectors, welding coordinators, and project teams.
- Drive continuous improvement activities across manufacturing, fabrication, and installation operations.
- Ensure products and services meet all regulatory, contractual, and internal requirements.
About You
We are looking for someone who combines technical expertise with strong communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Essential Experience / Skills
- Proven background in quality management within the nuclear supply chain or another regulated nuclear environment.
- Strong understanding of quality requirements for high-integrity fabrication, welding, and engineering projects.
- Experience with ISO 9001, ISO 3834, EN 1090, and nuclear quality assurance principles.
- Excellent knowledge of NCR management, audit programmes, inspection/testing processes, and supplier assurance.
- Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and client representatives.
- Strong decision-making abilities and a proactive approach to risk-based thinking.
Desirable
- Lead Auditor qualification (ISO 9001 or equivalent).
- Knowledge of UK-CA / CE marking, and nuclear safety culture principles.
- Knowledge of Sellafield Engineering standards and Contractor Quality Requirements (CQR Manual).
- Experience supporting tenders, framework agreements, and quality submissions.
- Membership or working toward membership of CQI, BINDT, or similar professional bodies.
