We’re delighted to announce that the Shepley Group is now a Strategic Partner of BuildForce, a not-for-profit career service supporting military personnel in pursuing long-term careers across the construction, infrastructure, and wider built environment sectors.

Buildforce is a nationwide initiative, designed as a mutually beneficial collaboration between ex-military service personnel and organisations within the engineering industry.

The partnership will see the Shepley Group supporting military candidates with direct mentoring, work placements and working together to create opportunities within our business and the wider Renew Group. We recognise the vast array of transferable skills acquired throughout a military career that can be used in a wide range of industry roles, such as project management, leadership, safety, and problem-solving.

We look forward to working collaboratively with BuildForce in the future and also as we approach Armed Forces Day 2025, where we take a moment to think about the dedication and the risks faced by those serving our nation and we humbly give our thanks.

The box was installed in memory of Eric Brown, former manager of the Cogra Moss fishery who passed away last year. Eric was a member of Cockermouth Angling Association and managed the fishery for many years.

Designed, fabricated and installed by the Shepley Group, the box will be used by anglers to submit reports and provide information about their fishing activity, including the types and numbers of fish caught, released, and kept, as well as the location and date of fishing. These catch returns help to manage fish stocks and monitor fish health.

More than 170 people from across PPP and the supply chain attended the Awards to celebrate outstanding work from individuals, teams and supply chain partners. Over 180 nominations were looked at by the awards judging panel and we are delighted with our achievement.

The judging panel commended our Right First Time manufacturing performance and local workforce, including our apprentice intake;

“West Cumberland Engineering are a local and long-term supplier committed to Sellafield. Their outstanding ‘right first time’ manufacturing performance on the SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) was commended by our award judging panel and their ability to meet every schedule milestone.  In some cases, manufactured items have been successfully accelerated from their original timelines to meet changing priorities on site and this has been a key enabler to accelerating the SCP construction phase.

West Cumberland Engineering has a workforce that is entirely locally based and includes numerous trade apprentices. The range and quantity of items they produce has provided an excellent opportunity for apprentices to develop their skills on stainless steel fabrication:  sectional steelwork, plate, flanged nozzles, and co-axial pipework without detriment to their performance.  Their performance has been achieved during the concerns and restrictions of the pandemic and this makes it truly outstanding and is testament to their work ethic and commitment”

Scope of Work

Manufacture, inspect, package and deliver a Skip Retrieval Tool, along with complete Life Time Quality Records. The SRT replaced an existing tool that had been damaged beyond use; the existing tool was situated in an active area, meaning that it could not be removed to be repaired and a new tool was needed.

This was a heavily engineered and complex piece of equipment that required highly skilled and experienced operatives (Platers, Welders, Machinists) supported by strong project management/engineering team to ensure adherence to the build specification and stringent QA requirements. The tool was delivered earlier than planned and commissioned almost immediately, with WCEL receiving reports that the tool was working well and without issue.

WCEL was also praised for going “above and beyond what is normally expected”, with the cooperation between WCEL and the client having “definitely shown benefits for the ease of installation and setting to work”. Due to the success of the job, another four tools were ordered, owing to West Cumberland Engineering’s attitude to high quality work and right-first-time dedication.

The scope of work for this project was to manufacture, inspect, package and deliver thirteen individual Pipebridge modules, with incorporated pre-installation of cable containment and insulated pipework, along with complete Life Time Quality Records. Due to the requirements of the Quality Plan, this project required close cooperation between WCEL and the client, which resulted in a successful project from manufacture to installation and handover. The Pipebridge installation was managed and carried out by Shepley Engineers Ltd. The installation phase was also completed to time and budget, with zero issues and a smooth handover

West Cumberland Engineering carried out over 300 pipe butt welds, with a 100% right-first-time pass rate. The project successfully saw 13 pressure tested modules installed, with the largest module being over 60 tonnes. The combined weight of all structural steel was 150 tonnes.
