			<p>West Cumberland Engineering have successfully completed the manufacture of 14 Pump and Valve modules, now ready for installation on the SIXEP Continuity Plant (SCP) facility, forming part of the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) framework at the Sellafield site.</p>
<p>The modules, all manufactured in Lillyhall, will support the new SIXEP plant, allowing operations to continue until 2050. Take a look at our video explaining the manufacturing process and how we are continuing to support the nuclear clean up process.</p>
<p>The project started back in February 2022 and surpassed over 80,000 working hours.</p>
<p>Each module is made up of a fully welded stainless steel outer framework which supports a range of different sizes pumps and valves connected together via a network of intricate pipework.</p>
<p>Nearly 2000 build 1 butt welds have been carried out both in the workshop and also positionally within the module with an exceptional right first time pass rate of 96%</p>
<p>Due to the complexity of the inter connecting pipespools, modular build and spatial constraints this project has enabled WCEL to showcase the extremely high level of skill we have within our workforce while also granting us valuable experience to develop our internal apprentice scheme with 8 apprentices having been directly involved across all stages of manufacturing</p>
<p>The project has faced multiple unprecedented challenges from various sources including significant global events. These have been overcome as a result of the continuous high working standards of the WCEL project team and the close collaborative relationship with and our client PPP. This has allowed the project to remain on schedule and operate smoothly while achieving the required results on time while also providing value to our client</p>

<p><strong>Scope of Work</strong></p>



<p>Manufacture, inspect, package and deliver a Skip Retrieval Tool, along with complete Life Time Quality Records. The SRT replaced an existing tool that had been damaged beyond use; the existing tool was situated in an active area, meaning that it could not be removed to be repaired and a new tool was needed. </p>



<p>This was a heavily engineered and complex piece of equipment that required highly skilled and experienced operatives (Platers, Welders, Machinists) supported by strong project management/engineering team to ensure adherence to the build specification and stringent QA requirements. The tool was delivered earlier than planned and commissioned almost immediately, with WCEL receiving reports that the tool was working well and without issue. </p>



<p>WCEL was also praised for going “above and beyond what is normally expected”, with the cooperation between WCEL and the client having “definitely shown benefits for the ease of installation and setting to work”. Due to the success of the job, another four tools were ordered, owing to West Cumberland Engineering&#8217;s attitude to high quality work and right-first-time dedication. </p>

<p>The scope of work for this project was to manufacture, inspect, package and deliver thirteen individual Pipebridge modules, with incorporated pre-installation of cable containment and insulated pipework, along with complete Life Time Quality Records. Due to the requirements of the Quality Plan, this project required close cooperation between WCEL and the client, which resulted in a successful project from manufacture to installation and handover. The Pipebridge installation was managed and carried out by Shepley Engineers Ltd. The installation phase was also completed to time and budget, with zero issues and a smooth handover</p>



<p>West Cumberland Engineering carried out over 300 pipe butt welds, with a 100% right-first-time pass rate. The project successfully saw 13 pressure tested modules installed, with the largest module being over 60 tonnes. The combined weight of all structural steel was 150 tonnes.</p>

			<h3><strong>At the time of construction, Evaporator D was the largest nuclear decommissioning project in the UK . It was designed to continue reduction of the volume of highly active legacy waste.</strong></h3>
<p>With Evaporator C having outlived its shelf life, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXw31pnBTpQ">Evaporator D</a> was designed to reduce the volume of <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/sellafield-ltd">Sellafield</a>’s most radioactive waste product &#8211; highly active liquor. The plant is the only evaporator on the site able to process high-level liquid waste created during the clean-out of the Sellafield’s reprocessing plants. It reduces the volume of liquor so it can be turned into gas form and safely stored.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.costain.com/">Costain</a> were the main contractor who subsequently appointed Shepley Engineers to deliver the<br />Supply, Fabrication, and Mechanical installation work in an Alliance named CS3, which included Costain, Sellafield, and Senior Hargreaves for HVAC works.</p>
<p>Following on from Evaporator C Shepley were responsible for all aspects of Mechanical and Electrical installation work for the entire project. The scope of service drew upon the complimentary support of the Shepley group companies, including <a href="https://ppselectrical.co.uk/">PPS Electrical</a> and <a href="https://www.westcumberlandengineering.co.uk/">West Cumberland Engineering</a>. Fabrication of all pipework, supports and module steelwork was carried out at our West Cumberland Engineering Workington facilities.</p>
<p>In addition to the contracts placed with Shepley Engineers and PPS Electrical, West Cumberland Engineering (WCEL) completed over one hundred contracts directly associated with Evaporator D. The majority of these were associated with pipework in some capacity, ranging from small spools and pipe supports through to large vessels, approximately 20,000m of pipe/ducting and a modularised pipebridge. The pipebridge featured 13 modules, weighing a combined 150 tonnes of structural steelwork. These modules were pressure tested, and the largest was over 30 metres in length.</p>
<p>West Cumberland Engineering carried out over 10,000 pipe butt welds with a repair rate of less than 2%. Individual condenser manufactured from NAG material over 2.5km of manual tig weld with zero repairs neccesary. The project fell slightly behind course, at no fault of WCEL. However the West Cumberland team were working extra time during the morning and backshift to ensure the project could return smoothly in line with time parameters.</p>
<p>The project was located next to a live nuclear operational facility with a restricted footprint which was adjacent to the Sellafield site operational rail network. This meant that a modular build strategy was required, and construction logistics was very restricted with limited access and lay down facilities. This was overcome by using an off-site modular build approach, just in time deliveries and enhanced logistics coordination and cooperation between all subcontractors.</p>
